Analysis and Assessment of Residual Ultimate Strength for Damaged Bulk Carriers

  • Considering the asymmetry cross section of damaged hull girder and the different inclination conditions after grounding and collision, based on the Common Structural Rules for bulk carriers by IACS , this paper proposes the progressive collapse method to analyze the residual ultimate strength when the damaged ship is on several accidental situations. A program is developed in FORTRAN language and can be used to calculate the res idual ultimate strength for damaged ships. A bulk carrier is systematically assessed for its safety and some useful conclusions have been drawn.
