Comparative study on simulation of resistance for planing craft

  •   Objectives  The small high-speed crafts have many advantages such as good mobility and concealment.As an important part of the small high-speed crafts, the planing crafts are widely used in civil and military applications.So the accurate simulation of the resistance of the planing craft is particularly important for improving the performance of the planing craft.
      Methods  We herein calculate the resistance of a planing craft based on American planing craft series 62 using the analytical-experimental method and CFD method respectively.Then we make a verification through the ship model test and analyze the results of each method.
      Results  It shows that the results of the analytical-experimental method are in well agreement with the trend of the planing craft resistance, while the CFD method can achieve high accuracy with a minimum error of 0.38% under high speed planing condition.
      Conclusions  STAR-CCM + software can effectively simulate the resistance of this planing craft, and either of the methods can be used depending on the required precision and conditions.
